The Youth and Families team work in the community in a number of ways which include Schools Initiatives, Family Support, 16+ Advice & Support and Community Activities.
Schools Initiatives
Life Skills Programme
This is a course currently delivered to Year 9 students with the aim of helping them:
- Develop communication skills
- Build self esteem
- Encourage teamwork
- Build positive friendships
Life Skills explores topics like 'Understanding Yourself', 'Handling Anger', 'Communication Skills', 'Food and Nutrition', 'Drugs and Alcohol' and 'Relationships'. The course involves different teaching techniques such as games, group discussions and written activities and students will also get to participate in a leisure activity. If the course is completed successfully there is also an opportunity to go on a 5 day residential trip in Shropshire where they will take part in activities like rock climbing, abseiling, ropes courses, raft building, canoeing, fencing and archery.
Mentoring
The Nomad mentoring programme is currently delivered into secondary schools. The purpose of mentoring is to provide a regular time and safe environment where the mentee feels comfortable to talk about issues in their lives. Overcoming obstacles, being able to discern between voices and different peer pressures at a time of massive intellectual, social, physical and emotional change is a huge challenge for any young person.
What is a mentor?
- A critical friend – providing the mentee with an objective and factual view on issues in a non-judgmental manner
- Sounding board – providing a safe and empathetic environment to test out emerging ideas
- Role model – providing a positive example from personal life experiences including the impact of negative or anti social behaviour
Other Group Work
Nomad also deliver school assemblies, CPHSE lessons and other small group work on a variety of issues including, sexual health, relationships, drugs awareness, values and self esteem.
Parenting Support Programme
Complimenting the work with children and young people Nomad also works alongside parents/carers offering support and training on parenting issues, housing and benefits issues, health issues, education and finding employment etc.
